Origins and institutional evolution

Congolese football took root during the colonial period as a popular game before being structured by missions and associations.

On April 7, 1919, Father Raphael de la Kethulle de Ryhove founded UFCC in Leopoldville, creating a lasting football structure.

In 1963, the organization became FECOFA; in 1964, FIFA/CAF affiliation opened the path to international sports diplomacy.

National competitions evolved toward the creation of Linafoot in 1990 to professionalize top-flight football.

Current priorities place transparency, youth development, women's football, and infrastructure modernization at the center of the federation project.

Golden era, crises and resilience

The Leopards golden era (1968-1974) turned football into a symbol of national unity with two AFCON titles and a historic 1974 World Cup appearance.

The 1990-2000 decades were marked by administrative and economic crises, but also by reforms that prepared recovery.

The return to the forefront was confirmed by CHAN titles in 2009 and 2016 and continental visibility of Congolese clubs.

This trajectory shows that stable governance is decisive to turn sporting potential into lasting results.
